Year after year, he packed his camera and supplies—everything he’d need for months—and traveled by foot and by horse deep into the Indian territories. At the beginning of the 20th century, Edward S. Curtis worked in the belief that he was in a desperate race against time to document, with film, sound and scholarship, the North American Indian before white expansion and the federal government destroyed what remained of their natives’ way of life. For thirty years, but at great expense to his family life and his health, Curtis lived among dozens of native tribes, devoting his life to his calling until he produced a definitive and unparalleled work, The North American Indian.

George Horse Capture wrote: As one admires the beauty of the Curtis photographs they must be placed in a proper perspective. In spite of the dedication and hardships the photographer had to endure, the ultimate beauty of “The North American Indian” lies not only with the genius of Curtis, but also and most importantly, within his subjects. The native beauty, strength, pride, honor, dignity and other admirable characteristics may have been recorded by photographic techniques, but they were first an integral part of the people. While Curtis was a master technician, the Indian people possessed the beauty and their descendants carry on these same traits today.

These portraits have a soft and slightly blurry quality to them due to the photographing techniques of that time and the overall effect is beautiful. This portrait is of a man named Little Daylight taken c.1905 and is one of three that I am offering. The other two can be found here:

Please note if you choose the "Print Only" option at checkout, you will receive the canvas print only with no wood hangers.

This portrait is printed onto 100% cotton canvas fabric. The canvas is displayed in a reusable poster hanger that is made of oak wood rails that are compressed together by antiqued brass thumb screws and attached to the top and bottom of the print. The hanger can then be hung on a hook or nail by the brass ring and organic hemp twine or bakers twine.

The wood is finished in your choice of 100% non-toxic and environmentally friendly finishes. You can feel good about hanging this in a nursery or child's room. I use milk paint followed by my own polish made of beeswax and organic hemp oil for the Old Oak and Black Oak finishes. Raw Oak has no finish for a Scandinavian look or you can paint or stain the wood however you please!

The brass card holder has a card that reads: Little Daylight c.1905

+ Solid Brass Hardware holds prints more securely then magnets. Brass ring prevents twine from wearing and breaking.

+ Oak wood is sourced from sustainably managed forests. Oak as an ethical construction material really is quite hard to beat. Having absorbed carbon dioxide throughout its life, an oak tree has already repaid its debt to the environment before it is felled. In addition to this, oak has a longevity and beauty many other materials cannot match.

+ Wood hangers are 1" tall x 1" deep (including thumb screws) x width chosen above + approx. 1".

+ Canvas and assembled poster hanger are shipped together but the print is not installed to avoid damage to the print. Installing the canvas is easy and no tools are required. Simply unscrew the thumb screws from the posts and insert the canvas edge in between the wood rails at top and bottom. Tighten the screws and your canvas is ready to hang.

+ Printed on heavy-weight cotton canvas fabric. Most canvas prints on the market have an acrylic coating which is a type of plastic. The canvas I print on looks and feels like cotton canvas fiber as it has no coating. I print in-house on a commercial printer using archival quality pigment inks.

+ Hand finished with 100% non-toxic and organic milk paint and wax. You can choose either Raw Oak, Old Oak or Black Oak. Raw Oak has no finish. See picture four for choices.

+ If you intend to stain or paint Raw Oak yourself please include a note at checkout so I can ship with the twine separate. Instructions will be included to thread the twine once your finish is complete.

+ Includes your choice of hemp, black or bakers twine with brass ring for hanging. See picture five for choices.

+ 24" x 36" wide size with Old Oak hangers is pictured.

Bought as a gift. Love everything about it! The canvas is heavy and the wood hangers are perfectly distressed with very nice hardware as well.
