Created in the mid-1930s in response to the Great Depression, the Works Progress Administration's Federal Arts Project tasked struggling artists with promoting the landscapes and wildlife of America’s parks.
Artist Chester Don Powell was born 1896 in Westmoreland, Kansas and was hired by the WPA first as a road flagman in the Berkeley Hills, then as an artist with the National Park Service in Emoryville, CA. In addition to the WPA Ranger Naturalist poster series he designed in the mid 1930’s assisted by one of his students Dale Miller, C. Don Powell worked as a model builder creating ship and bridge models for large construction projects.
I have altered the colours of this poster to create a cohesive collection of three posters that can be displayed together. I can print the original version on request.

If you have your own print and want the wood hangers only, you can find that listing here in custom sizes:
Please note if you choose the "Print Only" option at checkout, you will receive the canvas print only with no wood hangers.
Printed on canvas fabric with a set of solid oak wood rails that are compressed together by antiqued brass thumb screws and then attached to the top and bottom of the print. Easy to hang with brass ring and your choice of twine.
Wood is finished in your choice of 100% non-toxic and environmentally friendly finishes. You can feel good about hanging this in your home knowing it is not harming your indoor air quality by off-gassing. Milk paint, organic hemp oil and beeswax almost straight from the hive are the ingredients used to finish the wood. Raw Oak has no finish for a Scandinavian look or you can paint or stain the wood however you please.
+ Solid Brass Hardware holds prints more securely then magnets. Brass ring prevents twine from wearing and breaking.
+ Oak wood is sourced from sustainably managed forests. Oak as an ethical construction material really is quite hard to beat. Having absorbed carbon dioxide throughout its life, an oak tree has already repaid its debt to the environment before it is felled. In addition to this, oak has a longevity and beauty many other materials cannot match.
+ Wood hangers are 1" tall x 1" deep (including thumb screws) x width chosen above + approx. 1"
+ Canvas and assembled poster hanger are shipped together but the print is not installed to avoid damage to the print. Installing the canvas is easy and no tools are required. Simply unscrew the thumb screws from the posts and insert the canvas edge in between the wood rails at top and bottom. Tighten the screws and your canvas is ready to hang.
+ Printed on heavy-weight cotton canvas fabric. Most canvas prints on the market have an acrylic coating which is a type of plastic. The canvas I print on looks and feels like cotton canvas fiber as it has no coating. I print in-house on a commercial printer using archival quality pigment inks.
+ Hand finished with 100% non-toxic and organic milk paint and wax. You can choose either Raw Oak, Old Oak or Black Oak. Raw Oak has no finish. See picture four for choices.
+ If you intend to stain or paint Raw Oak yourself please include a note at checkout so I can ship with the twine separate. Instructions will be included to thread the twine once your finish is complete.
+ Includes your choice of hemp, black or bakers twine with brass ring for hanging. See picture five for choices.
+ the 17" x 25" size with Old Oak hangers and hemp twine is pictured.
+ If you already have a frame you can find just the print on canvas fabric here:
